another thing to add...
i was able to salvage this out of the system messages:
[eric@... eric]$ sudo tail -n 1000 /var/log/messages | grep ndis
Jun 12 13:56:25 localhost kernel: ndiswrapper version 0.8 loaded
Jun 12 13:56:25 localhost udev[3884]: creating device node '/udev/ndiswrapper'
Jun 12 13:56:25 localhost kernel: ndiswrapper adding w22n51.sys
Jun 12 13:56:25 localhost kernel: wlan0: ndiswrapper ethernet device
00:0e:35:14:5e:98 using driver w22n51.sys
so it looks like it is loading ok, but the module is crashing and
taking the rest of the system down with it.
any ideas??? should i file a bug report??
