Hi!
Today I tried to upgrade from smartmontools v5.27 to v5.33
and I noticed some problems with IBM IC35L073UCDY10-0 disks.
On all those disks I tested, smartctl prints the report,
hangs for a few seconds, then prints the last two lines with
some error message and the SCSI driver reports an SCSI error.
These failure was reproduced on 4 different disks (but all are
the same model, see above!) on two different machines:

I tested smartctl-5.33 on several other SCSI disks with the same
Linux-2.4.28rc1 kernel version (and also some other Linux kernel
versions, including older 2.2 and 2.4 kernels) without problems:
IBM IC35L036UCDY10-0 (4 different devices)
IBM DPSS-309170N
IBM DDYS-T18350N
IBM DDYS-T09170M (4 different devices)
IBM DDYS-T36950M
IBM DDYS-T18350M (3 different devices)
QUANTUM ATLAS10K3_18_SCA
COMPAQ BF03685A35 (3 different devices)
IBM DDYS-T36950N
The last disk on this list (IBM DDYS-T36950N) is on the
same machine and the same controller as one of the problematic
IBM IC35L073UCDY10-0 ("system "zeppelin"), but shows no problems
with smartctl-5.33!
I also tested with several IDE disks I have available here and also
did not find any problem with these. Also with smartmontools-5.27 I
never saw this kind of failure, even with the now problematic IBM
IC35L073UCDY10-0 drives!
To me this looks very much like smartctl-5.33 issues some SCSI command
the IBM IC35L073UCDY10-0 drive does not understand and which results
in SCSI errors.
Those errors are bad, though, as the drive goes offline after that.
(all drives I have tested are in some sort of Software-RAID, so I
could hot-remove and hot-add the disks and that way recover from
the error without reboot - many thanks to Neil Brown and his "mdadm"
tool! ;-))
