Well, this seems to be very very old information. Quoting from this
"There are plans to fix the text item, using a new font abstraction
called GnomeFont. However, Gnome 1.0 lacks this feature."
I just thought that now, about a hundred years later, with freetype
established everywhere, GnomeCanvas might have become something usable.
