did you wait for the system to _post_ that story before you restarted
apache and slashd?

When you posted the story, did you *change the author* in the select-
pulldown before you saved the story?
In the pulldown, was the new author even listed there?
Did you preview the story, to see whether your changed-author-

Do this on the site's database:
select uid,seclev,nickname from users where author=1;
If you don't see the new account with an author=1 and a seclev >= 100
then you did something wrong. Because if I recall correctly that's
the minimum recommended settings for an author's account.
