They refer to your version of XFree86.

I don't like the way lirc-aware programs work, so I use irexec and irxevent for pretty much everything. Can't help you. I had the xmms plugin working once, but found that using it pretty much required that i either use a remote with a lot more buttons or stop using lirc for anything else, so i got rid of it. This was years ago.
