Journaled File System

I'm using kernel 2.4.26 and yesterday after a system crash when
recovering the FS I had to use fsck with the --omit_journal_replay
option in one of the partitions: /usr. It seems that it moved thousand
of files to lost+found. I say it seems because I apart from the
machine crashing when doing an updatedb with 100% memory, swap and
CPU, I don't get any substantially different behaviour from it.

I cannot see what's under lost+found, ls just hangs, and I don't know
how to use jfs_debug to fix it. 

How can I see what's under lost+found? I suppose that this is the
first step towards fixing it.

Get the latest version of jfsutils from
http://www10.software.ibm.com/developer/opensource/jfs/project/pub/jfsutils-1.1.6.tar.gz and run "fsck -f" against the volume.  This should fix the lost+found problem.  Assuming you're using an older version of jfsutils, I don't know whether or not a newer version of the utilities might have let you fix the volume without having to resort to --omit_journal_replay.

Please let me know if this doesn't fix the problem or if you are already
using the latest version.

Thanks. But it didn't. I just went to single user mode and did the
fsck, it goes ok, but the lost+found directory is still inaccessible.

Any more ideas?

Darn.  I thought that would do it.

One more try.  Before fixing fsck (at least I thought I had), I had
created this utility to recreate the lost+found directory by moving one
file at a time.  The problem with ls, etc., is that fsck created a
messed up lost+found and readdir goes on forever.  This program needs to
be run from the root of the problem file system.

It recovered the lost+found directory and I just runed updatedb with
no problems. Now there's the issue of recovering the files under
lost+found. I've been checking them and they're mostly X man pages.

Would running fsck now recover the files to their original name and
location?

You probably lost one of the subdirectories of /usr/X11R6/man/.

No, the original path name information is gone. You're best option might
be to copy the missing directory(s) from another machine.
