Yes that would be a cool feature.  In fact it could be the default 
behavior for disabled levels.  Do you have an idea on how to log a 
message without showing it in the echo area?

Well, it's just a buffer, so you could always append to it.  I'm not familiar
with the native implementation.

Attached is a first implementation of the new library mmsg.el.  As you suggested shown and hidden messages are now logged :)

As some general functions are common with working.el, probably working should be modified to include mmsg and use it.

If you think of a better library name, it will be welcome ;)

A clever bit of sleuthing for logging messages in Emacs or XEmacs.
There is still a large commented out version in there.

It looks as if all messages are temporary messages.  Is that
expected?

Good question.   mmsg seams as good as any other.

Baby Ian is doing well.  My latest big project is getting the
catapults down the the Punkin' Chunk so we can compete again this
year (Nov 5th-7th).  As usual, lots of last minute preparations for
that.

There is always something to learn about Emacs ;)

Yes.  Maybe it would make more sense to display informational messages
temporarily, and other levels permanently?  Notice also that
`mmsg-temp-message' acts as `message' if there was no previous message
in the echo area to restore.  Finally, as messages are always logged they
are never lost.
