There are currently plans to make the back end a bit more "generic". The
goal is to support the current XML/in-memory model, along with support
for ZODB (Zope database). If this effort is successful, it may be
possible to "plug in" other back ends as well.
To do this will require a fair amount of code restructuring. I expect
that the XML and ZODB interfaces will be the "officially supported"
interfaces, but if someone wants to contribute a PostGRES or MySQL back
end, I would not object.
