I've started work on a patch that adds a "New File..." option to the filer
main menu. I've uploaded it to SourceForge. I started this because I wanted
an easy way to create files from within rox, without having to open a
terminal (or use the minibuffer).
At the moment, selecting the menu option displays a savebox for choosing the
location of the new file. In this version, the file is created by using
"touch <filename>", but in future I plan to implement some form of template
system based on mime-types. As it is, the patch is already quite useful, at
least for me, as it saves me having to keep typing "nedit newfile" in a
terminal and then ok-ing a dialog box asking if I want to create a new file.
The way I see this working would be to have a Templates directory (either
inside the ROX-Filer application directory or in Choices), which contains
files that you want to use as templates. The "New File" menu option would
become a submenu which displayed a list of the available templates. Selecting
an item from this submenu would copy the file from the Templates directory to
the selected location.
What do people think of this idea? Would it be usefult? I'm not sure of the
best way of storing the templates - should the submenu be generated "on the
fly" when requied by looking at the files in the Templates directory, or
should a list of templates be maintained in Choices somewhere, with a
mechanism to add a template (perhaps by dragging and dropping a file onto a
separate "Templates" application.
