Thanks for your report!

This bug is now fixed in CVS and the fix will be incorporated into he=20
upcoming 1.0 release, scheduled to come out in two weeks.=20

In the meantime, you can avoid the problem by setting you Statusbar to=20
display only the name of the selected person, not the relationship to=20
the Home person.

You can do it by opening the Preferences dialog, going to Display ->=20
Toolbar and Statusbar -> Statusbar and selecting the radiobutton=20
"Active person and and GRAMPS ID".

With the 1.0 release you should be able to switch it back, since the=20
problem will be fixed (it already is, actually :-).

Thanks for your report! Do you get this bug with any data, e.g.
with the example database? Do you have ~/.gramps/custom_filters.xml
file? What about ~/.gramps/report_options.xml file?
Could you send both of them to me?

This has been fixed in the CVS and the 2.0.6 will have the fix in it,
expected in about 10 days from now.

GRAMPS and even that one has some problems that are not
present in other environments.

Please contact Linspire and ask them to talk to us.
They may have problems with other libraries that affect gramps'
behavior. If they contact us we should be able to resolve this.
They should email gramps-devel@... and discuss
any issues they are having, such as packaging new version,
strange bugs like this, etc.

They won't do it unless they get input from users!
Please ask them to work with us to fix it!

Unfortunately, we cannot reproduce this problem.
Could you please provide the *exact* steps to reproduce
this? If you cannot reproduce it now, could you try
recalling what exactly was the situation?

Have you changed databases when this happened?
Were there any GRAMPS dialogs open? Which ones?

This is an unsupported report.
Please use Detailed Descendant report in the Text report
section. The Unsupported section will not even appear
in the next version.

The move is probably the problem. Right now, GRAMPS has problems with
non-ASCII/UTF8 characters in a path name. The problem is that GRAMPS
uses unicode internally, but the file system does not tell us what
character set it is using (ISO8859-1, ISO8859-2, etc.). Because of this,
we do not know how to convert the path name to something we can use.

can you have a look at: http://bugs.gramps-project.org/view.php?id=575
Is this the same bug?
Can it be that you opened the same database twice, changing in one and the
other?
That is not allowed in GRAMPS.

In future version GRAMPS 3.0 database will be locked so you cannot open it a
second time.

Should this be something else, please, provide more information on what you
where doing.

Perhaps that is another possibility on your system ?

Note further that you mention: Gramps version: 2.3.6-1
which is impossible as that version does not exist, probably a package
error, should be 2.2.6. Latest version is 2.2.8, please upgrade, perhaps the
issue is solved (hard to know without more information).

Don't see a mandriva package myself. I stopped using Mandriva because I
found it so hard to find packages for the software I need. I hope you have
success finding a 2.2.8 package. Installation from souce is however not to
complicated for gramps.

I will add that the packager compiled on his /home (do it myself too for
generating my own RPMs) but maybe he forgets mime and gconf schemas ...

Does a gramps.src.rpm or the gramps.specs for Mandriva exist, where ?
Maybe other rpmmacros commands could generate new packages.

First you obtain a lot of warnings which are harmless. GRAMPS expects media
to be directory names on your harddisk, not webpages.

Then you obtain a crash on opening the database. That crash is solved in
version 2.2.9
You where going to get a dialog with the message:

"Could not open file"

I cannot determine from here why the file could not be opened. Using version
2.2.9 should give you that information.

2.2.9 has a bug not allowing you to directly edit XML files.
Direct edit of XML is anyway something you should try not to do, better is
to import in .grdb database, do your work, and export to xml if you need a
backup or for other reasons.

If however you need direct edit of XML, you should use 2.2.8 instead, or use
the development version branch22 in subversion where this is already solved.
2.2.10 is not planned at the moment though, we consider this a minor
annoyance only.

pclos is not a well supported linux distro I'm afraid. For real work, you
are better of with one of the mainstream distro's that have security updates
and a wide user base that makes packages. For pclos, you can downgrade to
2.2.8 I think.

Anyway, your error, it is a wrong event in a family, apparently an event
thinks it is referenced in a family, but the family does not hold the event.
My guess would be it is an empty event, perhaps you have an empty event at
the top of your event screen if you sort on eventname?
Normally, the *rebuild reference tables tool* should fix the wrong reference
link, and after that the check tool should work. Is that not the case?

Two possibilities:

1/you moved your grdb file, this is not allowed:

tools:

I have not seen this bug before.
First note: The grdb files are not portable, read:
http://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Recover_corrupted_grdb

However, as you export, I don't think above is the reason. Perhaps there is
some bad data, try the following:

1/export to .gramps format to have a backup
2/in Tools run  'rebuild reference tables'
3/in Tools run  'rebuild secondqry indexes'
4/in Tools run  'check and repair'

If possible; upgrade to 3.0.1, they solve some bugs and add features (don't
use 2.2.9 though !)
The version you run, 2.2.9, has a serious bug when opening .gramps file, so
don't open those, import them instead !

Do you have a good backup? Backups should be done by export to .gramps xml
files.
Gramps 2.2.10 automatically saves a backup on exit in the directory you save
with extension .backup.gramps, before starting GRAMPS, make a copy of it in
a save place.
On exit, GRAMPS resaves a new backup, so this backup might be not good
already.

Your error looks like corrupted data, typical when moving or renaming the
database file, see

If the above is not the reason for the error, then the following steps
should help:

1/in the tools section run the rebuild reference tables tool
2/in the tools section run the rebuild secondary indexes tool
3/in the tools section run the check and repair database tool.

Once you have a good backup, start anew: make a new empty .grdb database
file, and import the last backup into it.

As you run ubuntu, upgrade to the last release 3.0.4 (package on our
website), with many new features.
As always, before an upgrade, store a .gramps backup in a safe place.
