The idea behind vil2 is that most of the time, you have a concrete
image format anyway (vil_memory_image_of<T> or vil2_image_view<T>), so
why not make that the common case. Other, more general code that
can handle images of unknown type (unknown at compile time, that is)
can use vil2_image_base_sptr.

I would recommend the CVS version. The core code is quite stable. The

Yes! I, for one, didn't realise that the examples.tar is out of
date. Thanks for bringing it up.

That is a good idea. It was done for the older versions of VXL (which
is where you got the example from), but hadn't been updated for the
FWIW, I've included a CMakeLists.txt and two example files I just
committed to the repository (core/examples). You'll need to add the
UseVXL.cmake stuff to the CMakeLists.txt to compile outside the VXL
tree, and remove the "SUBDIR(vnl_calc)".
