COORDINATOR, POST SECONDARY LIBRARIES TAL Online Developer The Alberta Library (TAL) is a non-profit province-wide library consortium and has achieved significant success in multitype library collaboration. The Alberta Library is responsible for the administration and coordination of the Knowledge Network Project for province-wide collaboration among post secondary libraries, focussing on licensing electronic resources, interlibrary loan and document delivery and the development of TAL Online. TAL Online is a web portal, integrating province-wide access to library catalogues, bibliographic relational databases and a growing range of other web resources. A project of The Alberta Library, the interface was developed as an OCLC SiteSearch WebZ application. The Alberta Library is seeking a dynamic and creative application developer to lead on-going design and development. This position provides an opportunity to work on the cutting edge of Web technology in an open source environment. Reporting to the Executive Director, The Alberta Library, the position offers the opportunity to work with other technology specialists on the development located at the University of Alberta Library's Information Technology Services. The position works closely with the TAL Online Development Standing Committee, public and post secondary steering committees, as well as with project teams whose work has implications for TAL Online. Key Functions Managing TAL Online production service, including * determining on-going configuration needs * recommending appropriate management/administrative policies and procedures * developing new features and services within TAL Online, in consultation with other staff and a development Committee comprised of participating libraries. * supervising developers and programmers working on TAL Online and related projects * developing training materials and planning training for participating libraries in collaboration with The Alberta Library staff * supporting TAL's communication of its online services among TAL members and others Leading technology planning for The Alberta Library * identifying and developing opportunities for province-wide online library services * providing technology consulting to The Alberta Library * participating in overall planning for The Alberta Library Requirements * MLIS, with at least three years' experience. Other candidates with 5 years' experience in a library information technology setting may be considered. * Familiarity with library automation systems and standards * Familiarity with current developments in online library services, and a vision for their deployment * Experience in product development is an asset. * Working knowledge and experience in working with application server and relational database technologies such as Java, HTML, Unix, Web technologies * Understanding of the structure and management of large-scale web sites, security and authentication issues * Working knowledge of Z39.50, Cold Fusion, PHP, MySQL, CGI and Perl is desirable. * Project management skills * Demonstrated ability to work in a consultative and collaborative environment * An independent learning style is an asset * Supervisory experience is an asset Salary Range: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
