From the bits of log you post here this looks more like _tex_ wasn't
found.

??? This is pretty standard Unix shell, it runs _at least_ with
zsh, csh, tcsh, ksh and bash (just tested). What makes you think
that '&&' is the problem?

BTW, Do not debug a build process by manually CDing into a subdirectory
and invoking make. These makefiles depend on environment variables set
from the main makefile.

As i allready said, you can't just 'cd' into a subdirectory and
expect your build to work ...

As far as i understand these files are generated by the build process.
If you run from the doc/manual directory your Makefile lacks a lot of
important environment variables. Have a look at make-tempfiles.sh which
is supposed to create these texinfo files from the docstrings of the
running image.=20

Sound advice in general, but the documentation is meant to be built  
that way, and the message at the end of a successful build says so.

The doc build process starts a freshly-built in-tree sbcl that then  
writes out documentation strings, adding some texinfo markup.  I ran  
a quick check and wanted to say "worksforme", but after "make clean"  
the process breaks for me as well.  I'll investigate tomorrow.

Well, doc building failed only in one of my trees ...  I traced it  
down to asdf apparently being loaded from source instead of from the  
compiled fasl.  In that case, asdf doesn't announce its presence via  
*module-provider-functions*, so all subsequent requires failed and no  
docstring snippets were generated.  How my tree arrived in the state  
that source files are newer than object files, I have no idea  
(although I suspect battling source control systems).

After applying the fix I just checked in, I watched the documentation  
build process recompile the already-compiled contribs (only one time;  
subsequent build behave as expected).  Anyway, it was failing with  
symptoms similar to David's and works now, so I hope this is fixed.
