I think it's the concurrency problems that would be more troublesome,
though I suppose there could be some sort of file-based locking to avoid
As far as permissions, the AppServer could either be suid (so long as
you aren't worried about a local exploit), or you could run it as the
webserver, and just make sure the permissions are right on all the
directories. That opens holes too.
Another possibility would be to have some sort of cron job that would
restart the AppServer if necessary.
