I must admit, I have no idea about the status of GCJ these days.
But if such a thing can be written with jfli/NEW-CLASS, it can be also
written without it, though much less conveniently. What NEW-CLASS does
is (a) it provides a saner syntax to ABCL's JNEW-RUNTIME-CLASS (which
generates/loads Java classes on the fly) and (b) it invokes jfli's
DEF-JAVA-CLASS on the class generated by J-R-C, which then defines
Lisp functions for calling Java methods, accessing fields, etc., and
also does some argument and return value conversions. See
