Update, I ran freecad from the cli, which looked normal but logged this:

matplotlib not found, Plot module will be disabled
pycollada not found, collada support will be disabled.

I can grok that the the first one might affect what I see, but have no clue 
what the 2nd missing, pycollada means.  Neither are available for 10.04.4 
LTS according to synaptic.

This is Ubuntu 10.0404 LTS with a few kde pieces.

And this is fixed, non updatable until another real time kernel suitable 
for running LinxCNC becomes available.  Since 10.04.4 LTS support expires 
in about 90 days, that is indeed being worked on.

Would fixing these missing dep's have any effect on my inability to 
generate the proper tabs to control the workspaces?

No, these 2 modules would just add extra functionality (plot module &
collada file format support) but there is no visible influence otherwise.
The fact that you don't have tabs is puzzling, i never heard of such a
problem before... Can you check if other qt-based apps that have tabs do
work correctly? The kazehakaze web browser, for example. Or maybe attach a
screenshot of your freecad window here...

This is a 10.04.4 LTS install, from the LinuxCNC web site.  Only enough kde 
installed to run kmail here and konversation on the atom based working 
machines.

available according to the synaptic package manager.

At what stage, first run, after opening the 'getting started' clicky or 
after closing the getting started tab?

(if that is what the right hand end of the tab gfx button is, it doesn't 
really look all that much like a close button)

Update:  Yorik PM'd me, saying that it probably was not a good idea to try 
and run it on an Atom powered machine with a realtime kernel.  Too 
dependant on OpenGL.

I hadn't actually tried to do anything with it on one of the Atom powered 
boxes because both of those are standup to operate machines, with the one 
driving the best monitor, a 22" SamSung HDTV being limited because that tv 
is on top of a 66" tall tool cabinet, causing a strained neck after a 
couple hours.

But, I ran it anyway, and it worked!  I now have the base element of an 
auto zeroing gage I am building for the lathe, drawn to its measured size 
and saved.  I would have gone farther, but it was nose bag and warm my 
diabetic feet time.

I've brought the gage parts and a metric caliper in, and will see if I can 
duplicate it here from a comfy chair.  More later.
