Thanks. Yes, I did want to paste everything from 2 and 3 at the end of 1, but Bob still explained the key I think I was missing. Namely, when selecting audio you must have the track selected, and when pasting you must deselect and then select the track into which the audio is to be pasted. Frustratingly, selection seems random sometimes, appearing on all tracks or sometimes on track3 when I didn't want it to. This coupled with Audacity being incredibly slow lately have made me reluctant to keep trying, but I guess I'll give it another shot now that I (hopefully) understand the process.
