Sean Purcell gave a really impressive presentation at the VuFind Summit on his use of Google Analytics for tracking all kinds of interesting VuFind stats. You can see it around 1:32:50 in this archived stream:

Unfortunately, the screen isn't very visible in the recording -- perhaps Sean can share his slides if he still has a copy.
The internal statistic tracking capabilities of VuFind 2.0 are improved over 1.x -- you can track to different targets, etc. -- but they're not yet tested in the wild, so there's probably still room for further improvement. Admittedly, Sean's presentation made me feel that handling this from outside may be more desirable -- but at the same time, there are obvious risks/drawbacks to relying on Google for your stats.
