CEDET

Hi !

I recently post on this list about this subject ! Beware with
the cedet embedded in emacs 24.1. It is an old version and has
bugs. In particular ede seems to be corrupted in this version.

Depend on what you want to do but :

If you are not in hurry be patient and wait until the last
version of cedet has been merged into emacs. But Eric seems to
think that it will take time.

Try to install 24.0.50 if the git or bzr repo allows that. It's
the one I am currently using (even if I am testing 24.1). But
once more beware ! 24.0.50 but not upper version such as
24.0.9x they seems to be buggy as well.

I suggested a hack on this list if you absolutely want to
upgrade to 24.1. It consists on replacing ede.el and
ede/files.el provided by emacs with those provided by
cedet-1.1. You can so get rid of the bug but it is not a very
clean operation.

Finally it may append that you want to use cedet but not the
ede part. In this case I did note notice bugs ....

So I need to stay away from the cedet with Emacs 24.1 but I don't want
to revert to an earlier Emacs.  Does that mean that I can/should
download cedet 1.1 and expect that to work with Emacs 24.1 (yes, I am
quite comfortable with installing my own packages for use with Emacs)?
If so, do the various setup pages referenced by the web site work with
that version of cedet?

To answer my own question: yes, that works.  I downloaded cedet 1.1 and
followed the directions to get it up and running with Emacs 24.1.

  I don't exactly see which pages you mention. But anyway I
  suspect that emacs 24.1 is not designed to work with an
  external cedet since there is an internal one. So you have to
  inhibit the use of the internal one to force it to use
  external one. Moreover embedded cedet is not exactely
  organized as external cedet. Files and directories are not
  exactely the same. For instance if you replace the ede.el
  file of emacs 24.1 by that of cedet 1.1 you'll have to change
  all commands such as require or autoload in the code. Indeed,
  ede-something in cedet 1.1 corresponds to ede/something in
  emacs 24.1.

  In cedet 1.1 eieio is packaged in cedet whereas in emacs 24.1
  it is elsewhere. But I'll suggest to keep the embedded eieio
  and only change other components of cedet. The embedded eieio
  version is recent enough.

  Well I hope these hints will be sufficient for you but if you
  want more details simply tell ! Anyway if you manage to plug
  cedet 1.1 in emacs 24.1 it will perhaps be usefull for Eric
  for the merge. I personally did only a very partial plug.
