I appreciate that - honestly, I'd like some extra hours in the day too. 
But you can't blame me for taking the time to read the guidance which 
says "mail it to Bill", mailing it to Bill and then when not getting a 
reply, asking on the list if that's the right procedure :)

If dropping the po somewhere is the better way, then someone should 
update the webpage I'd say.

If someone could commit that, that would be great. We're not doing the 
Help files and there may be a few missing strings cause we used Pootle 
to jointly work on it but I'll deal with any missing once these have 
been commited.

Hey :) I was not blaming you, if my message seemed rude, now that I
re-read it, this was not the intention, really :)

The better way...  For me the better way would be you uploading directly
to CVS :)

gd -> Scottish gaelic, If I recall right, GunChleoc pointed us to the
pootle server last year, found it:
http://pootle.locamotion.org/gd/tuxpaint/edit.html so the translations
can be downloaded directly from there if needed.
Note that there are new stamps added in CVS from the time were the files
were uploaded to pootle, you may consider to update them.

Well, I can have a go if someone explains what needs done. I have a 
machine which runs Ubuntu.

Once the files have been uploaded, do they automatically become working 
releases or language packs or whatever the term is on this project?

I've updated the stamps now - they're at 
 http://www.akerbeltz.org/tux-stamps.zip - if someone could commit that, that 
would be great. Or alternatively explain what I should do.

Had a quick shufty at it on my Ubuntu machine (after beating the stupid 
force-locale into submission) but that still shows the old translation - 
which is fine, I just thought I'd see if they're live already in case I 
had to correct anything.

In my experience, the guys that type with one hand usually don't end
up infants. . .   :-)

So what is the story with Tux-Paint L10n and Pootle?  It sounds like
you used to use it, why did that change?  If there is any interest I
can arrange for Pootle hosting for you guys at:

I'm the Translation Team Coordinator for Sugar Labs.  Sugar is the GUI
of the XO laptop from the One Laptop Per Child project, and Sugar Labs
is very upstream friendly, we host L10n in over 130 languages (more
are welcome) and share our L10n resources and community with upstream
projects like eToys, AbiWord and Gnash.  We wrap TuxPaint as a "Sugar
activity", so it would be a matter of enlightened self-interest to
assist your L10n efforts.

Nothing's the matter as such. We were using http://pootle.locamotion.org/gd

There are two minor issues with that, or rather with Pootle servers in 
general I guess:
1) the templates are not necessarly updated as regularly as one might 
wish. On Locamotion, WordPress.org for example is quite out of date. I 
think they're just stretched for time and the "Update from templates" 
feature doesn't work (yet).
2) you still have to grab the po files and submit them elsewhere

Well, now that we've gotten the Gaelic files up to date it's less urgent 
for our locale as such, since we're down to maintenance, but we're 
always interested in streamlining processes as it's *cough* our free 
time. But perhaps TuxPaint might benefit generally from running the l10 
stuff via a Pootle server? Perhaps it might cut down the need for one 
handed action?

I'm doing quite a lot of proofreading based on that, so new po will be 
forthcoming. Some points/questions...

- I assume the overrunning text (on Windows anyway) is an ancient gripe 
which has been talked about any number of times and for now, will stay 
like that? I'm trying to work around it as much as I can with shorter 
text (not easy in Gaelic) for now. I've gone over to using lowercase 
letters for the menu to save some mils.
- I've installed the stamps but there doesn't seem to be anywhere 
obvious where I can copy and paste the .mo. But then I expect way fewer 
problems from the stamps than from the menu. Same goes for the config 
po. Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and build it on my Ubuntu machine.
- I notice some items have sound included (as in, spoken language). If I 
make recording, can they be included? If so, what format?
- Is there any other locale data we need? I note that there are some 
languages which have done some font related stuff?

Not trying to rush anyone but just so I can timeplan (especially if I'm 
doing sound) - you mention that it'll get all rolled up into one when a 
new distro comes out. Is there an ETA for that?

I've already done that. There's not much I can do about a word like 
"clò-bhuail" (print) which overruns. It just doesn't get any shorter 
than that.

Given the target audience, that's perhaps not the most brialliant thing 
to do. And I suspect there will be other languages like Gaelic which 
almost inevitably will overrun. A suggestion (perhaps)? If the button 
contained only the icon but the text sat underneath on plain background, 
you'd gain a little space to begin with as the buttons are a slightly 
rounded convex shape which *loses* you text space. It would also make 
the text easier to read (over white background I mean).
