The cygnome project was for GNOME 1.4, which hasn't been updated in over
a decade. Why did you try to use instructions from a project whose
packages you weren't using?
Undo whatever damage you did to your environment settings (since Ports
installs into /usr) and use the following for your ~/.xinitrc:
dbus-launch gnome-session --session=gnome-fallback
Now you can use startx.
