The config.h comes from pre-autoconf version, adopting autoconf is
(always) work in progress. Leaving user-editable headers implies
interactive setup in some sort, while with autoconf's keyword it's only a
matter of ./configure --something, which can be done automated (read
"non-interactively") by, i.e., bsd ports or something like that.

I tried and gave up, that's why it's the way it is right now, but good
lucky, when you find the right way, share with me so that I stop abusing
-Dsomething everywhere :-)
