I think you are entering it as a textual comment rather than a date
The best way (as far as I know) to do what you want, is to click on the
date button beside the date field. In the dialogue that pops up, there
are two drop down lists in the middle - one labelled quality and the
other labelled type.
Drop the quality and choose Estimated. In the second one, choose the
most appropriate type. you can then enter the date and it will be a
value and will order correctly, etc.
