Untarring shouldn't overwrite unless files have the same name (you can
always backup in case :) ). I regularly expand archives of modules
onto bootable microSD cards. It is typically necessary to run 'depmod
-a' so linux can actually find the new modules.

If you are making the kernel directly:
$ make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-gnueabi- uImage modules
$ (sudo) make INSTALL_MOD_PATH=<path to install directly> modules_install
