Many thanks to Bernd and to Jonathan for your words of encouragement. I have
had a twofold aim in all the work involved: to produce computer organs
which will give great pleasure to those who play or hear them, and to
demonstrate that high quality results are possible with the tools that
others have provided, yet those results do not require vast computer
resources.

We are indebted to the makers of computers, computer operating systems,
audio software and hardware, and of course to musicians. We are the
beneficiaries of untold numbers of people who have worked hard with their
particular skills, many of them seeking no financial return at all. The
culture within the jOrgan community, headed up by Sven, is notable, and
inspires many of us to contribute to reaching high goals as a team effort.
It's great to be part of it.

Now to touch on the nitty-gritty: Jonathan, Marco has been in touch about
some odd results in the church, and I have pointed out that most of it is
probably bound up with the fact that a jOrgan disposition having stereo
sound with extensive panning separation is being fed into a mono system,
with inevitable misrepresentation of the levels of some notes. We are
investigating ways of minimizing the effects. At the worst, 30 minutes of
work on the Preset Global panning settings can change the soundfont into a
"mono" instrument more suitable for that particular church P.A. system.

Thank you for your remarks.
Regarding the Dorian Toccata (and this may indicate my advancing age!) I
actually slowed down slightly the original MIDI file using an editor, before
converting it for jOrgan use.   ;-)

Thank for you for the wide-screen conversion (which actually I am unable to
assess).

To all,
BTW the 3a version is probably the preferred one to use when playing jOrgan
MIDI files, as it can process normally any files recorded on 3-manual
dispositions.

An abbreviation of 'σχετικός' -- in English 'related to.' The Greek
equivalent of 'Re:'

However, some 'wag' might say all these discussions are a lot of sh*t.

Just opened my lap... he he, what a topic ! 

From Earlwood to Greek State documents (Roy where did you get this document !!!???) and... ΣΧΕΤ or Σχετ = Σχετικό (Shetiko, the h pronounced like in hero, not glued to S like Sh = ΣΣ, σσ)
Shetiko means relavent (and "related to" but not like relatives=cousins, brothers ect)

I'm not typing it at all !! I'm using the latest Yahoo beta mail Greek version and it adds it in my every reply here....
It probably has to do with relavent reply to a certain topic.
But the wide use of shetiko in Greece is, as it is used on Roy's Greek document.
I'm using a lot of "σχετικά" (plurel) in my Court cases (all relavent documents, official and not). I cannot do anything about, as it comes with any e-mail.... sorry about that.

Now to return to the main topic,
Has anyone tested my attached Asio disposition file of Earlwood 3b?
Works ok with John's files ?
Here it's like a curtain/filter was off, when switching from direct sound to Portaudio/Asio. Reveals all the qualities of the Earlwood organ !!

I was playing with 3b yesterday, Sorry Jacques and JP, I'll do my tests on B3 today....., and I 'd like to add some other observations.

096-C6 note is missing from all keyboards compass when first activate the instrument, I had to retype 96 in customize (was 95).
Is some special reason for this John? Is there a special function I'm missing?
Also, I my extremely personal taste and not at all objective, I would like some pipes not to be so hard panned left & right.Easy for me with Viena to place them where I feel more confortable with :-)

The only thing I missed , that also lately comes very handy here , is a master volume control element on console. This is the only addition I've made to 3b.

Hmmm Gents I believe Earlwood becomes a very standard jOrgan model, like main reference model for any person new to jOrgan. Simple and powerfull, it must be the 1st recommendation to new members, IMHO.

Pano,

You are referring to the Earlwood No.3b, which is meant to allow a 3-manual
disposition to be played fairly conveniently on a 2-manual console. The top
note of each manual is "sacrificed" (if the user so chooses), so that rapid
transfers of either manual can be made to the Positive department while
playing, and then back to its own department when needed. There are two
special pistons on the computer screen that perform the same transfer, but
you can hardly grab the mouse and operate them while playing a piece! Of
course, if you have two spare pistons on your physical console, then you can
use them instead of the two top notes.

Pano,

You are referring to the Earlwood No.3b, which is meant to allow a 3-manual
disposition to be played fairly conveniently on a 2-manual console. The top
note of each manual is "sacrificed" (if the user so chooses), so that rapid
transfers of either manual can be made to the Positive department while
playing, and then back to its own department when needed. There are two
special pistons on the computer screen that perform the same transfer, but
you can hardly grab the mouse and operate them while playing a piece! Of
course, if you have two spare pistons on your physical console, then you can
use them instead of the two top notes.

096-C6 note is missing from all keyboards compass when first activate the
 instrument, I had to retype 96 in customize (was 95).Is some special reason for this John? Is there a special function I'm missing?Also, I my extremely personal taste and not at all objective, I would like some pipes not to be so hard panned left & right.Easy for me with Viena to place them where I feel more confortable with :-)
The only thing I missed , that also lately comes very handy here , is a master volume control element on console. This is the only addition I've made to 3b.
Hmmm Gents I believe Earlwood becomes a very standard jOrgan model, like main reference model for any person new to jOrgan. Simple and powerfull, it must be the 1st recommendation to new members, IMHO.

What about those who have a touchscreen? I do, and a piston on the console
would be great and easy to operate. No mouse, no fiddles! Just a gentle
touch of the screen.

Like everything else, I would do it myself if I knew what is involved. Like
with the addition of a stop to your EARLWOOD 3a, (Ref (Σχετ [hehehe]) my
private emails to you), I had no problems before.... but now I did not
succeed! Could it be changes in the recent jOrgan edition?

Thank you for your work on the Earlwood organs.  I have set up the 3a on 
my 3 manual console and congratulate you on the beautiful soundfont 
ranks you have created.

I don't know if it is just me or if I should read your 7 pages of 
detailed instructions, but I was not able to find many preset 
combinations.  I opened the memory viewer and loaded the .memory file 
but still didn't find combinations.  Not being a church organist all I 
can do is try stops.  I think it would help people quickly hear the 
capabilities of your creations if there were some combinations at least 
in the General pistons.

What you are requesting for Model 3b is already provided: a piston each for
the Great and the Swell, and called "PS" (I'm doing this from memory). Touch
it once, and the transfer to the Positive is made; touch it again, and we're
back to normal. Try it out, and notice the change in colour.

I can't answer your second question because I don't yet know enough about
what you have actually done.

It's true, I didn't provide any general combinations. In fact any
departmental combinations will merely indicate testing.  Sorry.

All,

As always, there are things I have overlooked. I have just discovered that
some ranks are without the "notEqual 9" channel property. There is also a
very minor discrepancy in the Gt Open Diapason preset.
I have put the corrected dispositions in a small zip file (link below). If
you choose to download this, you will of course need to find the disposition
files in whatever folder(s) you have them, and replace them with these new
ones.

actually slowed down slightly the original MIDI file using an editor, before
converting it for jOrgan use. ;-)

I had a listen, and the tempo there seems almost identical to what my MIDI
file ended up with. Of course, Freiberg's reverb is vastly longer than what
I am hearing on the Earlwood 3a using Panos' Fluidsynth settings! There is
also an obvious pitch difference between the two renditions.

files.  I have tons of good stuff I haven't even touched the surface yet. 
Maybe I should zip up a good collection and send them to you.  

  Also I'm wondering if we should start a repository somewhere for
everyone's midi recordings that also has an identifier for which
version/dispo they were created with.

Panos,

I tried the Asio disposition. I could not get it to work. I looked up your
private email instructions and followed them. First I got an X on the
realtek output in the ASIO window.... then jackaudio would not show Java so
connection could not be created.

My fears are realized! I am not always successful in getting all this
together. Too many steps each a potential cause for problems. Imagine this
happening in church.....!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd be reciting prayers backwards!

I think the repository idea is great, and my recent constant use of your
MIDI jOrgan files convinces me that here is a fairly untapped area for
endless jOrgan enjoyment. However, I can't offer my website, for I have
suddenly realised that with recent uploads I am very close to the limit
allowed by my ISP. (It is, after all free). I shall have to tidy up and
prune what is already on it.

Thank you, Geert. That unique record, I call it "Schwanengesang" or "Odysseus last recording". Freiberg is very close to Richter's birth-town, you know. Finally, he seems to express the pure architecture, form only.

Oh, listen to the fugue, too. The Toccata is nothing without it, because everything leads to the fugue's final chord blocks.

Earlwood 3b with ASIO means ONLY Asio not Jack !!!
Aka open Earlwood 3b as is from the box using the reverb settings John has set.

So, before opening Earlwood 3b-Asio DO NOT OPEN Jack.
If you like I can make this afternoon a second file like Earlwood 3b - Jack.

Try it. Indeed my aim was for us opening Earlwood with just a click and get no latency with Asio which is running in our systems anyway from booting up till shut down.
And to use it in Church indeed !

Though I got, since my youth, many of Karl Richter's performances, I missed this one for so long.
We cannot reproduce this kind of reverb (Friberg) with our FS reverb element.
So many reflections, materials of the building, hight ect, we need more parameters to adjust.
But, with Earlwoood's ranks and creating an alternative disposition file with Jackrouter as device for portaudio driver we can use Reverberate LE (SIR2 better, but not free...) and construct an environment close to Friberg Cathedral. He he , here we go to Architect's fields, aka knowing information about the Cathedral's building ect, but can be done no doubt.

Thanks again for the ogg files !

I forgot.
There's another way to get Friberg's reverb with Earlwood 3b, or any dispo :

One of us who may be close to Friberg Cathedral, can go in with a small stick or whip, no more than 40cm and a leather seat, or something like that, at an hour where no people or noise are sounding inside, aka close to silence. With the stick he slaps on the leather hard and the result is recorded with a laptop as .wav file. Better if a good microphone is inserted in the laptop where Reaper or a similar app is on and a good preamp VST is used on microphone's channel. Save and go .

Then this .wav file, named FribergCathedral.wav, can be used in Reverberate LE as an impulse responce from Friberg Cathedral and with some work on parameters we end up with natural Friberg acoustics ready to be used on Earlwood and all our models !

Thank you for your offer. I'm not sure what is the best way to handle this,
and others will probably have a better idea. Al will certainly have some
comments, and may have in mind using his own website as well - one thing I
would recommend is some kind of full backup of the repository on at least
one other website, so that its secure existence does not depend on the one
site.

We are talking here about MIDI files and not audio files, so they will be
MUCH smaller.

It was not the reverb that impressed me so much as the unique quality of the organ tones on those ogg recordings.  They have a modern-synthesizer quality that is superior to that of modern synthesizers.   When speaking of Freiburg Cathedral and Friberg, you are speaking of two different churches and two different organs, aren’t you?  I have seen programs of the “Joy of Music” that featured the four organs of Freiburg Cathedral and their tone was far more “silvery” and had none of the “synthesizer” quality of tone that these ogg recordings have.  But Silbermann organs were noted for their crystal-clear, silvery tonal qualities.  Although I very much enjoy the recordings and the quality of tone, they are very different from anything I have previously heard from Silbermann organs.

Ok, it can be done without the stick and the leather seat, just with claping hands (trial of many styles...), but the lap and the mic are essential, unless we got an old mini-disc or something.
Imagine the priests when the man starts to clap the hands around Friberg !!!

Earlwood/ASIO. 
Take a look on sample rate at FS properties : are the numbers (44.100 or 48.000) match the rate of your soundcard settings? Realtek isn't it? I know it has options.

showing. No X but the organ reports fluidsynth failure.

But THIS is also Richter.......it is amazing, how much emotion is in this
interpretation, nonwithstanding the use of bigger ensembles than we are used
to nowadays!

Despite his untimely death he has unveiled Bach in such a masterful way!

Geert,

Thank you for that link.
It's Friday morning here in Sydney, and playing that video had me thinking
it was Good Friday again.
It must have been made over 30 years ago, and you can see this also from the
hairstyles etc.
It seems to me that the world has changed a lot in the past 50 years. Yet
the music of Bach and what motivated him remains as timeless as ever!

Hi all,

I believe I have corrected the various issues needing attention in the
latest release of Earlwood 1c, 3a and 3b suitable for jOrgan 3.13, and I
propose within the next hour to upload to my website the release as a single
zip file. I shall need to delete the existing three zip files before I do
the upload. This seems the most efficient use of the room left on my
website, as all three versions make use of the same soundfont.

It may be a little time before I bring my website pages up to date with the
link placed there.

Further to my previous post, yesterday I uploaded yet ANOTHER zip file for
the three Earlwood 3.13 versions, having changed the channel select messages
back to what they were previously, before the Fluidsynth developers fiddled
with them (if that is what they did).
I earnestly hope it can remain untouched now.

The link has not been altered.

I have just discovered three errors in the recent upload mentioned in the
previous post, and have corrected them in a further upload.

If you have already downloaded the zip file, the quickest way forward would
be to open the two dispositions involved, go into Construct and correct the
Engaged Messages as follows:

"Engaged  set 176, set set 0, set 0"  should be   "Engaged  set 176, set 0,
set 0" 

The three ranks involved are:

Earlwood 1c    Rank:  Voix Celestes 8

Earlwood 3a    Ranks (within Great Group):  Open Diapason 8, Principal 4

I apologise for this. Quite plainly Fluidsynth didn't mind these errors in
the Bank Select messages - otherwise the mistakes wouldn't have slipped
through.

many thanks for those marvelous dispositions. I've installed and tested them some days ago, and I see sound developments of most intense artistical quality. Especially I might mention here the most remarkable quality in the synthesized reeds. It's a great joy for me to study the soundfonts. Thank you very much again, for the constant effort you spent into those HQ developments.

I heard marco yesterday playing one of the earlwoods during mass, and i 
was noticing something with the reverb,

certain notes would be softer then most of the others, one of the notes 
i remember for sure was the a if you play the G you will notice an 
intensity difference.

Some might say its the acoustics in the church, but i dont think so

Marco could provide you with more information and details in that respect.

On another note Bernd. The earlwoods are some of my favorites :D i have 
yet to try the new ones on 3.13, but i have on 3.12 and love them :D

Thanks for your intervention Jonathan. Indeed that was the case and I have
already discussed the matter with John privately.

On checking things at home, I discovered that the solder in the circuitry
used to concert stereo to mono (attached to my laptop-to-PA cable) was
broken on the left channel! I believe this caused the whole distortion to
the sound and possibly the offensive hum at the start!

If this solder issue turns out to be the problem, then going through changes
in the disposition as suggested by John would not be necessary I should
think.
