The old db2, mysql and oracle-spatial modules can go afaik, they have been
replaced.

I've just sent a mail about shapefile renderer on the users list, I know quite
a few people used to use it.

postgis versioned is used by the GS WFS-V and GSS modules, and that
in turn depends on the old postgis module. There should be also some
uDig based client somewhere making use of it.
So to delete them we'd also have to remove the dependent modules.

Don't know about the other modules

As with Justin I would like to keep postgis versioned around (I expect I will soon have budget to formally port it to jdbc-ng).
I had a request for vpf via private email recently; so it is still used. There is a completely useless "gpx2" module.

whatnick was interested in jts-wrapper and geometry; and I am still searching for funding to make use of them (as we do not have another alternative
for geometry at this time; although I have identified several projects none seem to be very good).

geometryless depends on sql-datastore; so if you would need to remove it as well.

This discussion is striking me badly as many of these represent our technical direction; and I am not interested in killing them just because they are not used by geoserver or uDig.

I think a larger issue is that some of these modules have not attracted any "replacement" module maintainer. Perhaps we are too mean to module maintainers.

I am not particularly worried about checkout time; but build time is a concern (we had the idea of breaking out "pending", etc..).

Let me suggest a more radical move; as I am also tired of being asked questions about DBF (twice this year) or geometry (three times this year) without any funded interest. Especially dangerous when people see code and decide they will wait for it to be ready...

So let me suggest a more radical move:

- kick unsupported into a separate branch (we already don't make it as part of our download; lets not make it as part of our maven build either), and we can supply instructions on how to build the code. This would at least encourage volunteers to say "i will work on that" at which point it could be moved into ...
- "pending" for the modules that actually have a plan to move to supported status

I think an unsupported branch is a terrific idea !  It would reduce
update and build times; allow people to experiment without having to
worry about breaking the build; and keep these modules visible - a
short page in the docs could describe the idea of the branch, and give
a one line summary of each module.

That's not the angle we're trying to hit here. We have customers, and potential
ones, complaining that GeoTools is full of "junk" and they point at the
unsupported modules. So it's a cleanup angle, has nothing to do with
that is useful or not useful from the pov or GeoServer and uDig.

The idea is not to remove all unsupported modules, but at least the ones
that are really dead and in no shape for resuscitation.
Simone compiled a list with some that should not be removed, I agree,
but there are a few that are indeed just increasing the confusion
such as mysql/oracle-spatial/db2 (becuse they have stable replacement).

Most of these module are outside of the build, not a build time issue.
A clean-ness one.

We already have the separate branch for all of those modules, it's the past
ones. If you create a parallel branch who's going to keep it up to date?

I don't view the unsupported modules as part of GeoTools; they are a community out reach
area - a wild attempt to get more contributors.

Agreed, the gpx2 should also be scrubbed.

Asking people to grab stuff from the past would also work for me; the downside is we cannot
ask people to fix things in the past. 

So what would the procedure be; they would ask on the email list if they can work on "excel" for example; and
copy it from 2.7.x to trunk?

Shane we we considering dropping things from GeoTools unsupported that do not have a friend.

Actually there are two excel modules one in GT to read in excel files
(that I wrote a while back) and one in GS which writes out excel files
(that Shane was interested in) but it would be cool if we could
refactor the GS one to make use of the GT code and add writing to the
GT code.

Shane - let me know if that seems like a plan to you, and I'll look at
writing up a GS proposal.

I actually completed and submitted the changes to the GeoServer Excel output
format plugin. You can see the code here:

code uses a text building workaround suggested by Yegor Kozlov of Apache
POI for writing Excel 2007 .xlsx files because writing large files using the
object model uses huge amounts of memory, but the code is designed so that
the overriding methods for this fix can be removed later if performance
improves and the code will revert back to using the POI usermodel.

I'd be happy to collaborate on this and proceed as you suggest (move
functionality to GT and have the GS plugin utilize those classes), as long
as two concerns are satisfied:

1. The installation process for a GeoServer end user should stay simple. I
suppose that even if you had to install a GT plugin along with the GS
plugin, the GT plugin jar would be packaged in the zip file as a dependency
so it would be no different.

2. I'd prefer not to throw away the code I just finished! I don't yet have
any understanding of how GeoTools is structured and how the input/output
plugins fit into the architecture, but I imagine that much of the existing
GS Excel writing code could be moved to GT without too much trouble...

Also, I looked for the Excel plugin in the GT SVN but couldn't find it:

The svn repository moved some time ago to osgeo hardware:

GeoTools and GeoServer in general get along very well together so installation would stay simple; Ian Turton also expressed interest in the Excel plugin and may be able to introduce you to the code?

I have not personally looked at the Excel plugin; my understanding is it implements a DataStore for accessing Excel files. There are a couple tutorials here with respect to making a datastore (http://docs.geotools.org/latest/userguide/tutorial/advanced/index.html); although I suspect it may be easier just to review the excel plugin and ask questions on geotools-devel.

Please remove the old db2 module. It even seems that I am the only guy  
using the new db2-ng module. There are no mails concerning db2 on the  
user lists (geotools and geoserver) and I will not invest one second  
for bug fixing in the old module.

Sounds good; I also had a couple of questions; probably stuff I just don't use:

What is "matfile5"? Can we rename gt-swt to just swt.

I am sorry we have to keep postgis-versioned / postgis for now; one thing we could do as a temporary
measure is disable the factory for the postgis module (or combine the code with postgis-versioned).

matfile5 reads (some) matlab5 version 5, the only one (to our
knowledge) that is documented.

A couple more things need to be done for this to be closed off.

1) Need to remove the following from docs.

2) Need to rescue the SDO test cases from oracle-spatial (the jdbc-ng only took the SDO class and not the test cases).

3) Need to sort out Jira; what is the call on this can I mark all of that stuff as closed won't fix? Or should I leave the "components" there to handle new issues reported against oracle, mysql, etc...

If the modules have been superceded by something newer I'd ever migrate
the issues to the new module, if there is one, or leave them there.
Otherwise close as won't fix?

I don't have oracle to verify the test; I am just saying that this work is not done; it was not done with the jdbc-ng port happened and left until later. Is now later?

I currently have a some docs for Christian and a uDig release to get out; so my volunteer time is limited for this evening.

I guess it is, but it seems neither of us is intentioned of porting
the code over.
