At first I did not think of disabling UAC for lack of a clear error
message and because I am not a daily Windows user myself. But when it
finally worked it did not surprise me at all, because even with low
exposure to Windows I have often seen weird effects of UAC on different
programmes.

I tried the command in three ways: from the command prompt or manually
as you say, from a .cmd file and as the command in a desktop shortcut.
They all gave the same result.
Something else I noticed which may or may not be related: if I connect
to the viewer from the right-click menu, after I type the hostname and
click the Attach button, I see another dialog titled "TightVNC Control
Auhentication" (it's missing a "t" ;)) that says: "This operation
requires authentication on the TightVNC Server. Please enter the
administrative password as set in the server's configuration." The
dialog has a text field for the password and OK and Cancel buttons. This
does not appear when starting the tvnserver.exe command, and only the
first time the icon's menu is used after logging into Windows.
But when using the tvnserver command without UAC the connection does
work, so the password dialog may be unnecessary anyway?
I am not sure what else I can tell you, but if you still need more
information that I can provide you with, please let me know. And thank
you for looking into this!
