I get the same problem after installing via Live CD.
Some translations files were missing, so I just downloaded and installed them:

I also get a trash issue (ie. to retrieve data from trash), but it seems to be related to the synchronisation (new method).

I added some additional packages:
geany, intltool, automake, autotool, m4, pylint, gtranslator, poedit, django, xdg-utils, rcs, pyenchant, etc ...
+ removed OpenOffice and added LibreOffice.
If glib is unstable, you should try an other desktop session!
In the past, I often switched from GNOME to Xfce while the first one was not fully well configured: I removed my gnome profile, update files, configurations from a Xfce session! To compile Gnome files from a Gnome session sounds like to compile a X files with a graphical server active...
Note, Ubuntu is maybe not the optimized distribution for making his own packages! It already provides a lot packages ready for use.
