I normally use msys.bat to start the shell. But I experienced the delay
when I started a windows CMD window and just stared bash.exe. Or when in
emacs and did the compile command (in that case, I started emacs from an
msys shell that was started using msys.bat).
Also, I recently installed mingw, using the app get program as
instructed on the site. But I did have cygwin installed at the time. It
is certainly possible that something funny happened in the install. But
I think it would have to be some conflict with an existing software
package of some form since I really think that the mingw install was by
the book.
In all, getting very cool, but it has taken quite a bit of time. And
kind of a litany of "little thing".
Like emacs' next-error function not getting the file name correct...

This is odd, because when I start MSYS, Wireshark shows no packets of
any kind.
I'm running MSYS using the msys.bat file, which brings up a cmd.exe
(i.e. I'm not using any kind of console application) with bash running
in it.
What are you doing? Are you using a console program of some kind?
