It really looks like smartctl is detecting my cciss/SATA devices
correctly - as this is the correct serial number for the failed device;
# smartctl -s on -A -a -d cciss,9 /dev/cciss/c0d1
smartctl version 5.38 [x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8
Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/
Serial number: 9QJ2MWNV
Device type: disk
Local Time is: Mon Nov 1 16:32:44 2010 PDT
Device supports SMART and is Enabled
Temperature Warning Disabled or Not Supported
Informational Exceptions (SMART) enabled
Temperature warning disabled
SMART Health Status: HARDWARE IMPENDING FAILURE GENERAL HARD DRIVE
FAILURE [asc=5d, ascq=10]
Current Drive Temperature: 26 C
Read defect list: asked for grown list but didn't get it
Error Counter logging not supported
[GLTSD (Global Logging Target Save Disable) set. Enable Save with '-S on']
No self-tests have been logged
Long (extended) Self Test duration: 14040 seconds [234.0 minutes]
***but smartd fails to detect them as per the open ticket.
I am quite confused, any suggestions?

Tom
