Replace calls to `isdigit(3)` with a wrapper that performs an explicit
`char` -> `int` expansion prior to invoking `isdigit(3)`.
In NetBSD, `isdigit()` is a CPP macro that expands inline to a lookup of a
global array. Using a plain `char` argument to `isdigit()` runs the
risk of implementation dependent behavior since the result of widening
a `char` to an `int` depends on the signedness of the `char` type on
