I'm running Windows XP SP3, and don't compile the exe but instead have
downloaded the exe installation back in 2008 or so. So the file
"knowndrives.cpp" would not be on my drive, and would not be in any .exe
unless I downloaded it, right? If that's true, which exe is it in? And
thus to update, do I have to re-downoad 5.38 or whatever to refresh this
Thanks for your help.

Since SVN-Revision 2998
it's in a new file "drivedb.h"

For 5.38 it is in the file "knowndrives.cpp"

If you use a current version of smartmontools, you may replace your
"drivedb.h" with a fresh version from trunk.
