Hey Larry
Index Data's yaz has always been my toolkit of choice in the c/c++
area, it's the toolkit I first used for doing Z3950.
If you'd really like to go with java but can't get on with JZKit, and
fancy trying peter's approach, you can use the same a2j ASN.1
precompiler that jzkit uses under the hood to cook up your own Z39.50
codecs, and use it's runtime. That will basically give you the
protocol stack but nothing else. I wouldn't suggest writing your own
ASN.1/BER encoding stack unless you've a lot of time and really enjoy
debugging binary wire encodings :)
There was also a java toolkit called jafer that came out of a jisc
funded project at oxford, which you may be able to dig out.
