Do you have the new Maps/SM 0.5.2 loaded?
As a test to further isolate your problem, try googlemaps and yahoo
maps as well. I realize you need to get keys, but that's easy, and
you'll have more of a sense where the problem might be.
I've been using googlemaps for both geocoding and map display, without
the kind of trouble you describe, for points all over all continents.
I just tested Aberdeen, Scotland, and it worked correctly for me.
