As a big fan of Ubuntu I would like to mention the lightweight variety
Xubuntu. It needs just 128MB of RAM, and works well even on older
machines, especially if you go for the 8.04 LTS version. 9.04 has some
improvements, but is not quite as light. Changing an Ubuntu
installation into Xubuntu is a very simple process.
