This smartctl release should also be able to auto-detect this USB-device
on Linux. The detection relies on info found below '/sys/block' and
'/sys/devices'.
Could you please test whether smartctl also works without '-d sat,12'?
A new option '-d test' can be used to print the result of auto-detection.

During my tests of smartmontools USB support I found that most of these
types of enclosures result in disk temperatures above 45 degrees (at ~20
degrees room temp.). In vertical position, the disk is typically 2-3
degrees cooler than in horizontal position.
