The appropriate udev rules for USB Garmins (at least Forerunner and
Edge) are installed by the garmin-forerunner-tools package, which is
much simpler than trying to add them yourself, although in my experience
the rules for Ubuntu Dapper on the Linux hotplug page on the gpsbabel
site have worked fine.
If you use the garmin-forerunner-tools package, your user will need to
be a member of the group ‘plugdev’.
A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a
