The "/dev/ttyUSB" driver in Linux is broken.  Avoid it and use "usb:" so we
can talk straight to the hardware.

Actually, since we found out today we have two Linux vendors on the list,
could you guys PLEASE stop configuring the broken kernel driver to load by
default?   This is easily our #1 support problem on Linux...

I did a "rmmod garmin_gps" and changed /dev/ttyUSB0 to usb: and now it works
perfectly.

Even gpsbabel -t -i garmin -f /dev/ttyUSB0  -o kml -F out.kml should work.

My investigation shows that garmin_gps allows to download the data
from Garmin device, but doesn't allow to upload the data to device.

There is a small problem on my Debians. Although I did follow your
instructions I can access 'usb:' only as a root so I must use a sudo
command.

For some combinations of hosts and Garmin hardware, that may be true.

Debugging the kernel driver is beyond the scope of this list.  It's been
shown to work badly many, many times here.

We don't know which "Debians" are yours, but the whole point of the article
at http://www.gpsbabel.org/os/Linux_Hotplug.html is to fix that vary
permissions problem.

If it's ineffective on whatever Debian you have, please investiagate
whatever version you have and how to tame their USB Hotplug system to play
nice with normal users, so we can document the workaround here.

Debian 5 blacklists garmin_gps by default.

The appropriate udev rules for USB Garmins (at least Forerunner and
Edge) are installed by the garmin-forerunner-tools package, which is
much simpler than trying to add them yourself, although in my experience
the rules for Ubuntu Dapper on the Linux hotplug page on the gpsbabel
site have worked fine.

If you use the garmin-forerunner-tools package, your user will need to
be a member of the group ‘plugdev’.
