Are both ends of the network g or better capable? Does "iwlist wlan0 scanning" show anything special. Or at least show Bit Rates: 54 Mb/s. If the other end doesn't support it, you're not gonna make a connection using it.

Most local access points around here are b only. I guess with it's limited range it helps keep the customers in house and prevents the company from servicing the neighborhood. Or they're too cheap to buy anything more recent. Or are worried about compatibilitiy or something. In one hotel I was in you literally had to go to the lobby to get a connection. Although if you were creative you could get close enough to the 8th story window to get a low grade connection. Laptop on top of the back of the chair and within three feet of the window. Much better transfer rates in the lobby though. But only 2 out of 3 wall tethers actually had power in the lobby. And renovations were under way, so not the most pleasant environment.
