OK, I created a user in the chroot and ran this. I get, among other things:
(WW) SIS: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:20:0) found
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
lspci shows 2 "VGA compatible controllers", one at 00:0d.0 and one at 00:14.0
So it seems my trouble is stemming from the fact that I have 2 video cards in this machine. One is an onboard video, which does not work (no screen output even during the POST).
