Which is why I said each user must make an individual choice :-)

I've never used libtool, so can't offer any opinion on it. I *have*
experimented with automake, and for me, it is the component of the
autotools which puts the `hell' in `autohell'. But, that's just my
opinion, and, as you say YMMV; that's why I say `decide for yourself',
rather than just `don't use automake'.
But, if you are having trouble with autoconf, have you considered that
it may be because of the (nasty, IMHO) way that automake affects it?
