The tool you refer to completely erases flash so the gumstix can be
JTAG programmed
as if it were new.
"we can provide a tool which will generally recover the flash,
but it involves completely wiping all the data off the gumstix and
starting over from scratch."
The tool is used when:
"...write to your flash, and it's no longer erasable or writable by u-boot"
If your u-boot works, you'll have to reflash the root filesystem.
If your u-boot doesn't work, you'll have to JTAG reflash u-boot and
then reflash the root filesystem.
