Ok, I solved the problem. It seems that the ALSA driver for via8233 is not
working properly in my case (maybe because of my Jetway 625EMP
motherboard?). The alsa driver snd-via82xxx loaded ok but I'd no sound. So I
completly removed ALSA support from the kernel, and I tried an OSS driver
included in the kernel and named via82cxxx_audio. From the name it seems to
be a driver for a different kind of card, but looking into the source code
of the module, I found that it supports many of the VIA's 8233 family.
Now I've sound, can play mp3 and audio cds using xmms's libparanoia plugin
for digital audio extraction (as there's no cable between my cdrom unit and
the soundcard, it was the only method).
