Hello All,

Answering myself again..

I managed to salvage my restoration by
A) restoring all users and groups with /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, and
/etc/group.
B) rsync'ing /etc/webmin/virtual-servers
C) Modifying ownership on all the 'homes' within the virtual servers
D) modifying ownership on /var/spool/mail/*

Thanks for the help and concern.

I got my server back up and functioning! And while the old backup/restore
on virtualmin 2.60 did not work as advertised, I've no doubt that the new
one has been improved and may work. You just don't know for sure until
you actually have to recover a machine whether something will work 100%,
and if you do not take the precautions otherwise, then woe be to
you!

Glad you got all that sorted out!
If possible, I'd like to take a look at one of the old backup files to see why it wasn't restored properly. Virtualmin was written so that old backups are forward-compatible, so I'm surprised that it didn't work.

I love Webmin/Virtualmin/Usermin! This is a very strong product!

Glad you still think so after the trouble you ran into :-)

- Jamie

Repeating my last message with no replies, but adding to it:

Lots of problems with Virtualmin:
Trying to forward an email for an account listed in a domain listed in
Virtualmin, get this error message:

Failed to save mailbox : The additional email domain 'cspice.net'
is not managed by Virtualmin
I upgraded the Virtuamin server to
Virtualmin 3.49 and now I get a listing that incorporates all the mail
accounts, lists the aliases as 'disabled', but not all of them. Some of
the domains appear to have restored correctly.

Here are the series of events that got me here:
(The whole point here was to upgrade the OS of this mail server, so
complete rebuild!)

1) scheduled backup of all domains into single .tar.gz under Virtualmin
2.60, rsynced to backup server
2) Rebuilt new OS (CentOS 5), installed latest Webmin, Usermin,
Virtualmin 3.39
3) Attempted restore of Virtualmin backup. makemap failures in the
virtuser table.
4) uninstalled Virtualmin 3.39, installed Virtualmin 2.60, re-attempted
backup restore.
5) new errors with vitusertable, still failed restore.
6) dissected virtualmin.tar.gz backup into individual domains (24 in
all). recreated individual .tar.gz for each domain.
7) restored individual domains with failures. makemap virtuser
failures.
8) manual restoration from rsynced backups: /home directory with all
domain and user structures.
9) manual restoration of /etc/passwd, /etc/group, /etc/shadow,
/etc/mail/*
10) upgrade Virtualmin to Virtualmin 3.49, recheck/reverify
configuration.

* NOTE: Quotas were setup under old system. They are not yet setup under
new one. Is this the problem? Can I go back and setup quotas
now?

Mail accounts are working. Aliases are not.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
