Webware for Python

I recomend you to take a look at Cheetah[1] or Kid[2] as template
language and at FormEncode[3] to form handling.

Or even better, you can pass a default value to the "field" method:

f1 = self.request().field('Donit', None)

As already explained, if the checkbox is not set, then there will be no 
field with that name. So you need to check whether the field exists at 
all. If it is set, then there will be a field with that name and the 
value as defined in the input tag. If you have several check boxes with 
the same name, and more than one of them are checked, it will be a list 
with all these values. So you may need to check the type as well.

Instead of the first line, you can also write,

if self.request().hasField('Donit'):

Or, as Michel suggested, you can replace all 4 lines with:

f1 = self.request().field('Donit', None)

The starting page is Docs/index.html; it is the same as the online Docu 
at http://www.w4py.org/Docs/

Click on "Component Index", then "WebKit". There you have the manuals 
and tutorials for WebKit, the main Webware component. There is also a 
class and file list for the Python modules belonging to WebKit. For a 
first orientation, the summaries are helpful. For instance, you will 
find the methods for accessing fields listed under ## Fields ## here:

That's a curious statement.  Why do you "have" to use Python with Webware?

There's nothing wrong with Webware, of course, but there are a LOT of
very competent Python web frameworks available today (in fact, I wrote
an essay on that in comp.lang.python last week), and Webware isn't the
top of my list any more.  If you had said "we evaluated the alternatives
and decided Webware fit our style the best", I'd congratulate you on
your decision-making process.  But I'm curious about "I have to use
python with webware".

There is documentation, but the best documentation is in the samples and
the source code itself.

That's a personal choice.  None of the IDEs are going to help you very
much with web code.  I use vim for all of my Python coding, in part
because it works the same whether I'm on my local machine or ssh-ed in
to my web server.

... oe of the best *free* IDEs. Another one would be PyScripter (though 
only for Windows). But the commercial IDEs such as WingIDE and Komodo 
are still better. However, for developing a Webware application, you 
don't really need an IDE. A good Python-aware editor such as Emacs, vim, 
SciTE or PSPad may be sufficient, as Tim alread noted.

I love using WingIDE. It has a lot of maturity and polish, and the
debugger is a great time saver. I think it's more expensive not to use
it if you're doing plenty of development.

There is a DebugAppServer in WebKit that is single threaded and used
for this purpose. It's not WingIDE specific though--you could use it
with any debugger.

Could we have a pointer to your essay?
I did a tour of the numerous python web framworks available not so long
ago. I choosed webware, because it is simple and powerful.
Which one did you choose?

Yes, I think that's still true, but today there are really many great 
alternatives. E.g. for my next project I chose TurboGears. I'm curious 
how it will compare to Webware.

One problem with TurboGears is that it is much more difficult to keep 
up-to-date with current development and changes. If you're running your 
own server, that's ok, but if you deliver software that other people 
have to install on their servers, that may be a problem. Some major 
changes will happen even after the TurboGears 1.0 release which is still 
not available and documentation is lagging behind. It may be a good idea 
to replace Kid with Markup, and maybe also SQLObject with SQLAlchemy, or 
have them as alternatives.

But I'm also curious about Tim's choice. Besides TurboGears, there's 
also Django, Pylons and many other frameworks.

(BTW: Don't worry, I'll continue to maintain Webware releases, even if 
I'll use other frameworks for new projects.)

My comp.lang.python newsgroup posting from last week was in response to
someone who wanted to create their own, brand-new Python web framework,
and was asking for advice.  My response was basically that, although I
understand the attraction of doing it yourself, the current plethora of
frameworks is actually hurting Python as a language.  It would serve us
better to pick one or two of the good existing solutions, and
concentrate on making them "excellent".  Here's a tinyurl link to the

I did, however, write a Wiki page several years ago giving my real-world
experiences with several of the then-popular solutions.  It's at

My current favorite is CherryPy with Cheetah.  I like the compactness,
simplicity, and deployment ease of CherryPy, and I really like the
expressiveness of Cheetah (which, by the way, also integrates quite well
with Webware).  However, ALL of this is so very personal that just
giving a recommendation is not particularly helpful.  I, personally,
like the ability of doing a little bit of computation in my templates,
which draws me to Cheetah.  Others find that thought horrifying, and
want a nearly pure separation of presentation from computation.

By the way, I don't want to seem to be detracting from Webware.  I know
this is a Webware mailing list, and Webware has been very, very good to
me.  I've just drifted away, so to speak.
