I have one additional idea (unfortunately it would mean the
reinstallation of the machine): to install the 64bit version of FC
instead of 32bit one, since you wrote that the cpu is a 64bit AMD
Sempron. In that case we would be able to make the amd64 Linux build on
the same machine, in addition to x86 Linux and 32bit Windows. (64bit gcc
can generate 32bit code by using the -m32 command line option). In case
of reinstallation it would be probably better to use the latest FC
version which is currently FC6...
