Thanks very much for your email.
You point about /dev/lirc makes some sense - if I do a ls -l /dev/li* all I see is:
[root@... /]# ls -l /dev/li*
srw-rw-rw- 1 root root 0 Jul 18 23:14 /dev/lircd
No /dev/lirc0 - is this the problem? Any ideas why it's not there?
BTW - no I have not patched lirc - should I? Is there a how-to somewhere?
Thanks again for your help.

Subject: Re: Getting MCEUSB working
I have not been using lirc for long, but may be able to help.
It looks like lircd is unable to find your dev file for the mce, which
is definitely the case when you did not modprobe lirc_mceusb. I often
get this problem and you run irw and lircd helpfully dies in the background.
By default lirc looks for /dev/lirc as far as I remember and I
sometimes get a case where this device is not created, but a device
/dev/lirc0 is -always- created. There are postings about adding to udev
to fix this, but I tend to run lirc to point to this second device...
lircd -d /dev/lirc0
Have you patched lirc? Depending on whether you have a new version of
the mce you may need to replace the mceusb driver with a re-written one
to get anything useful out of it.
hope this helps
