That does seem to be it. As I mentioned in reply to Vox, starting Eterm from
a menu as 'tcsh -c Eterm' makes everything magically work.

Doesn't seem to work :-/
It appears as though all shell variables are already set. I told Eterm to be
a login shell, and it behaves very nicely at that, loading all my shell's
