You must configure the IP of the uml instance from inside the uml. e.g.
root@...: ifconfig eth0 inet 192.168.0.1 up
root@...: ifconifg eth0 inet 192.168.0.2 up
than you should be able to ping them. after that change your stored
network configuration. Use the manual to you distribution to figure out

apparently the interface is not configured on the uml instance. try
manualy with ifconfig (see above)
