create a calender entry an choose associated project?
To be honest, that's what I'm trying to avoid.

Hm ,you said something similar...
You can create a project and then you can assign a calendar entry to =
that
project. This entry gets used to display scheduled times in projects.
Maybe that's the right thing for you.
